Hi All,
This is just a kindly little reminder that postings on this tribe should be about EEMED, "An Evening of Experimental Middle Eastern Dance" concert.

I set up a different tribe, (look to the left) for Experimental Middle Eastern dance in general. Please put non-EEMED postings there.

I always love to hear what everyone is doing.
thanks!

Menagerie of Twelve

Sat, June 14th, 2008
at Studio A Dance
2306 Hyperion Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90027

Malice Dreaming Productions is proud to bring you a theatrical dance retelling of the classic Grimm fairy tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses.

As the clock strikes each hour, witness each ensorcelled princess be forced to dance her own story for her malevolent captor and collector. Night after night, each princess, bound by magic, returns to repeat her performance.

This is no willful excursion of 12 girls to a secret ball. There is no forest of gold and silver-leafed trees. No boats will carry them across a lake to a gilded castle. No princes will accompany them, dancing the night away.

But perhaps there is still one who can set them free.....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bellydance Dracula!
I'm not kidding. There was this show in Britain, kinda like a ballet but not. Instead of ballet, it was all bellydance and it told a story--the story of DRACULA!
Well, kinda/sorta. The guy playing Dracula is very good, btw. Anyway, you can see it here:
Just a quick update. I am starting to process Friday and Saturday's shots. Lots of great stuff from excellent performances all around. Sunday will take a bit longer--I took more shots each subsequent night, and have run out of drive space unexpectedly <blush> so I have a drive on order to handle the new load. You;d think I would know better by now, but at least I refuse to compromise my backups to make quick room.
Anyway, I'll post updates as progress is made.
how EEMED changed my life
long long ago, in a land far away....(okay not so long ago, and it was in a land known as north hollywood....), i sat as a fresh faced new-to-bellydance dancer in a dark room, waiting for the first EEMED show i was to see to begin.
after the show was over, i sat in the audience, in a comatose-with-pleasure absorbing state. i knew at that point that Amara had changed how i viewed dance forever.
she inspired me, to explore avenues i never knew existed, to take bellydance out of its familiar element, and blend it with theatre.
and so i have, and this year marks the 3rd annual post-halloween dance show that i produce: Dance Macabre III
November 2nd & 3rd, 2007
Malice Dreaming Productions is proud to present:
Dance Macabre III
at Red Dragon
1444 N. Highland Ave
(Highland at Sunset Blvd)
Hollywood, CA 90028
Our third-annual horror themed theatrical dance show, in case you're just not ready for Halloween to be over yet...
Due to popular demand, the show runs 2 nights....2 chances to catch the spellbinding dance-dreamery of some of the most innovative bellydancers in California
21 and up with a full bar, ID's will be checked.
**make sure you and your entire party are 21 and up at time of ticket purchase, as there will be NO REFUNDS!
doors open at 7:30pm
show starts at 8:00pm
Street parking. Be sure to read the signs regarding parking regulations around the venue to ensure you don't get ticketed.
First come, first served, limited seating!
Logomotion Writing Workshop
Sometimes our words don't have access to what we know in our bones.
In this workshop we will be improvising moving and speaking, and we will be writing.
While our writing will stimulate our imagination and support our improvisations, our improvisations will enrich our writing with a kinesthetic timing to phrasing and windows on sudden thoughts and memories.
Our activities will include studio sessions of improvisational moving and speaking, spontaneous writing, walks in town, with partners, for conversations about matters large and small, and private times to write and to craft our writings and to read them to each other.
We will borrow from the writing practice of Natalie Goldberg as found in her books “Writing Down the Bones” and “Wild Mind”, discovering the associations that gather spontaneously around a chosen point of departure.
As our movement work will include many activities in partners and in groups, some of our writing will include more than one voice, focusing on the relationships between the thoughts of different people.
A goal will be to write with wild mind and intention, and with awareness of world.
Jennifer Dunning writes in her 1991 New York Times review: “Simone Forti presented her first dance program in 1960 and has since then had a steadily increasing influence on post-modernist choreographers interested in exploring ‘natural’ or non-formalist movement and dance”.
My dear friends,
As a courtesy - as the previous advertisement is no longer accurate - this post is to notify that I will not after all be able to attend the Vegas or LA X-Med as an instructor. My schedule may end up permitting me to pop in as a performer during the eve show, but this has not been confirmed. I will keep you posted!
My apologies if this disappoints anyone! The most magnificent Djahari will still be there to represent Desert Sin as well as the rest of the wonderful scheduled instructors.
Thanks for your understanding,
Hi All,
Just letting you know EEMED 2006 DVD will be coming out soon. I get to pre-view it this weekend. And there will be a bonus track, from Cecilia, who did a beautiful piece for video.
And new pictures will be up on eemed.com soon. I am making my way through several thousand amazing images that both Michael Baxter and Herb Kissling took.
I had a wonderful experience this year. And the theater, which we all fell in love with is eager to have us again!
Hugs,
Amara
Saw the show on closing night and was so impressed and inspired by the creativity, ingenuity and passion!
I was truly riveted. I'm still chuckling to myself over Amara's mirages and Djahari and Cassandra as the magpies. I loved that!
So nice to see powerfully thoughful pieces, but it's lovely to laugh once in awhile too!
Can't wait for next year! Hopefully one of these days, I'll have the opportunity to be part of the cast!
Jeremiah, P*Diddy and I went to the EEMED show last night. There was such a great variety of performances this year. My top three performances were Amara's "Thirsty", where a thirsty cowgirl is tempted by mirages, Cera's bellydance/lyrical fusion "Hide and Seek" where she seamlessly blends the two forms of dance in a brilliant choreography, and the final piece, a dedication to Loie Fuller that is so simple and beautiful that it makes you want to cry.
Other highly notable pieces were The Theiving Magpie piece by Djahari and Cassandra of Desert Sin, such clever use of movement and costuming, Abyss by Nella showing the effects of divorce and domestic violence, and a perfect burlesque/bellydance blend by Erin Sullivan (aka Miss Foxie Moxie) in Shimmering Shedding Sheila.
Definately a must see! You can find ticket info at
http://www.eemed.com/index.html
The show runs tonight and next weekend.
Hi All,
I wrote a long couple of passages for Bhuz. So I thought I'd share them with you too.
The first is on, what is fusion.
Love to hear any comments.
Amara
For a while, I was really unhappy with my fusion definition. Basically, my thoughts were, if one divides dance into three very basic and broad elements - movement, costume, and music - fusion plays with one of those elements (generally music). Whereas experimental plays with two or more of these elements.
My ideas have greatly developed since my interview on BDTV. I no longer see fusion as changing one of these three elements and experimental as changing two or more. Though this is what fusionists often do. The most common fusion is doing cabaret dance to another type of music. When I started Middle Eastern dance, this was the new and radical thing to do. But no longer.
Fusion has become the “in” word. It has become a catch-all phrase, just like the word “modern” dance. It is used by many artists to get funding in this, here comes the word, multicultural society. Fusion sells. The idea of cross-cultural connection is hot, or cool depending on your position. And Middle Eastern dance is not the only form to do this.
Fusion reflects and produces the society in which we live. The idea of fusion (and experimental does this even more) promotes the idea of originality, innovativeness, individuality which is so idealized in American culture. Our post-capitalist society demands consumption and an eternal drive to find something else to sell. We need more choices. We need to create new things to sell and consume. We are participating in a society where the speed of change has increased. Where the ability to communicate and buy things from around the global has hit an intensity never seen in the world before. We live in a nation-state, and especially for those of us living in larger urban areas, where we are constantly being bombarded by different cultures living together. Our economic structure centers around pulling and buying items from various cultures and nations. Americans have become that post-modern society, full of power to make choices and draw from various cultures and societies. A society that performs and produces a self-identity built upon the pastiche.
And as artists and entertainers, we draw on what is around us. I know that for me personally, though my work is very anti-capitalistic in many ways and personal while also being global, I draw from the culture around me. I present and explore the world in which I live in as an American. I critique as well as participate in this society.
Fusion and experimental Middle Eastern dance are a part of an American dance process and history. They are forms emerging from the world in which we live and dance in. A world, which also needs its traditional dances as well. These are just other choices.
With that said. There are a lot of interpretations of what fusion is, which we see in this and other discussions.
Fusion as can be a process in which two or more elements are fused seamlessly. It is where the dancer is creating a third product out of these two elements. The point is to make two forms’ individuality difficult to distinguish.
Fusion can be the processes in which two or more elements are brought together but are still distinguishable.
From my research, the experimental Middle Eastern dancers I have interviewed would say it is the first. That fusion is seamless. It creates an end product.
These elements can be music, movement, costumes, venue, gaze, emotion, structure, etc.
Most fusion has brought together dance forms that share many dance elements, close cultural ties, and or close historical connections. This is why we see a lot of Flamenco and Indian fusion.
Some people have mastery over the two forms.
Some people have a mastery of only one form, and add what Djahari of Desert Sin likes to call flair or styling.
Some people don’t have a mastery of either form.
Once again, my interviewees say that you need to have a least a mastery of one dance form. Personally, I think if you are going to fuse two styles of dance, you need to know both extremely well.
Aesthetically there is a range of ability just like any other dance form.
There is a difference between the process of fusion and the naming of a style as such. What we have seen in the past ten years is a naming and the formation of a new subject. Previously, fusion (and experimenting) was just a process. American cabaret is a fusion (where dancers also experimented) of various forms of Middle Eastern dance and depending on the individual, may also include things jazz or ballet. National folkloric groups like the Reda troupe are a fusion (and experiment) of ethnic dances and ballet, along with other things. I would actually use the word experimental rather than fusion in these processes. For complicated socio-political reasons these processes are often covered up and disowned in order to form what I call tradition. These fusions and experimentations have stabilized into a tradition with their own names, subject, and structure.
In the past ten years, these processes have stepped away from just being processes to their own subject hood. This is why we find emerging dance forms no longer with names based on geographical location like Middle Eastern dance, Egyptian dance, etc. (I would love to know how traditional dances achieved their names) to styles named by their creative processes. There are some fusion styles that have completed their formation in terms of naming, like gothic belly dance. The fusion has become a new genre.
Experimental has not stopped in its formation. Idealistically it will not ever become anything definable as a style. Experimental Middle Eastern dance flaunts and explores these processes as part of its structure and identity. It is exploring and trying new things. It resists stability. Whereas fusion often looks to be stable.
Experimental Middle Eastern dance as a process incorporates fusion but encompasses a whole lot more. It is about trying various connections in order to find something new or interesting. There is a sense of play, manipulation, and exploration. Experimental Middle Eastern choreographers are not looking for some stable style (though the repetition of play and experimentation in Experimental Middle Eastern is creating a form of stability). There is a reflexive process and a focus on continually trying new things and making new connections amongst a variety of elements. Experimental and fusion Middle Eastern dance is also about opening a new space and seeing what can develop there.
cross posting - consumerism
Hi All,
Here's the second one. It was a reply to someone about experimental Middle Eastern dance being driven by consumerism. Love to hear any comments.
Amara
I went of on a tangent because I’m working on a conference paper on global states and globalization. Sense this will help my project, I’ll it unpack it more. So thanks for the comment and inspiration
I wouldn’t say that fusion is driven by consumerism per say. I think experimental Middle Eastern dance (which for me fusion is a subset) is driven by lots of ideas, needs, and desires. Just at that moment, I was thinking about how American global market and economy, American post-capitalism culture, American cultural ideas of freedom, and experimental Middle Eastern dance connect and disconnect.
There are many spots within the consumer exchange to approach this dance form. But I’ll focus on the two main one; those who buy and those who sell.
Experimental Middle Eastern dance is intertwined with consumerism at the point of buying. As I mentioned before, we are living in a time where the speed, the amount, and the variety of objects to buy from around the world has hit an all time high. There is a strong awareness of this in our culture. As well as an inclination to draw into our lives these various possibilities. This is also encouraged by our sense of freedom and desire for as many possibilities and choices.
Capitalism looks for new markets and new objects to sell in great quantities. I think food is a great comparison. Our (at least mine) grocery stores are full of fruits and vegetables brought from all over the world. The distribution system allows us not only to eat foods from other parts of globe, but for the most part, at any time of the year.
This is where experimental Middle Eastern dance connects in with American consumer appetites. Experimental Middle Eastern dance is a style based on being able to choose what you want to bring into your dance. Our range and opportunities to do this has grown, along with our global economy. Within this kind of market, come our abilities as dancers to choose various elements of dances from a variety of different sources. We can pull and draw from more than just what has traditionally been conceived of as Middle Eastern dance. My options of what styles of dance I want to learn are boundless (I live in LA. So this is not true all over the US.) I just have to drive down the street and I can learn almost any dance form. For others, they can buy videos, look on the internet, etc. I can go to different parts of the city and shop, buy music, costumes, materials, objects, from around the world with immense ease. We live in a culture that encourages this globalization of our ideas, dances, and bought objects.
So buying things to put into my experimental Middle Eastern dance is influence by a global market and a society that is full of cultures interacting and connecting. This can be said to an extent for Middle Eastern dance in general as well. It is not only found all over the world. But it is much easier to buy from and travel to the Middle East than every before for those living in the US.
But there is another side to this issue: the consumption of the object that I myself produce. Capitalism needs objects to sell. And dance is not a very stable object. The performance itself is transitory, fleeting, and unique. One can sell the dance to an audience. But I know many producers can tell you, producing shows and events are very difficult ways to make money. We don’t sell enough tickets to make a living. Only huge productions, backed by investors, and that can charge $60-200 a seat, for a thousand seat theater, and are at one location for months if not years at a time are making money. We just don’t have the financial infrastructure as other dance forms. All productions are risky ventures.
Then there is the style itself which is anti-capitalistic. Certain styles like experimental Middle Eastern dance are hard to repeat. Each performance is different. Each piece is different. It resists being codified and defined. Capitalism likes to box things up into labels and categories so they can be easily identified, advertised, and consumed.
Also, in my own work, I am not just consuming things made and produced by others. This is partly why I don’t do a lot of fusion. Much of my work involves exploration. Figuring out how things work. How and where a move comes from. How to create structures that allow me to express what I want in that specific piece. These are processes that are hard to sell.
We can sell classes. We can sell knowledge. We can sell tours. But once again, these events are hard for capitalism to sell. Capitalism likes objects that are easy to reproduce in mass quantities, to lots of people, for a profit. The Middle Eastern dance community is itself slightly non-capitalistic as are most art forms. It is made up of both professional and amateur dancers, which can have conflicting motives. Amateur dancers don’t need to make a living from the dance. And therefore bring an array of anti-capitalistic concepts into the mix. And though professionals do, they often dance for little or no pay (for various reasons). Our professionals rely upon the amateurs for their living. There is not a huge profit margin in the dance. Professionals don’t get paid to learn, practice, rehearse, or choreograph. They get paid to teach and perform. But not for the work they put into producing their talents. And often what is made outside the community is reinvested into the dance. We are a niche market. So in some sense, we are not fully participating in a capitalist or consumer market.
Until fairly recently it was hard to consume a dance. But now with videos, one can actually sell a product. And this is where consumerism again comes in. Now you have an object, something tangible that can be easily reproduced and sold to different parts of the world.
But then you get into issue of distribution. We have one in the Middle Eastern dance community, which is growing into mainstream markets like Amazon. But experimental Middle Eastern videos are not often in any network system. We’re still outside to the most part. Very few venders are interested in carrying this style of dance (for various reasons). Or they want such a huge percentage that it’s not worth (at least for me) the investment to work with them.
It’s very difficult to say that experimental Middle Eastern dance is driven by consumerism, because we don’t have a large consumer base. Fusion has a larger one. It is tradition, which is in the mainstream of the Middle Eastern dance community and is what’s mostly consumed. Our audience is growing but is still not very big. What we do have is an audience that not only is inside the Middle Eastern dance community but also connects to the dance world in general. They expect each show and dance to be different. And to see things they haven’t seen before. This variety is hard to package and market. Not impossible. But difficult.
Being driven by consumerism means we are either consuming and not producing or that we are able to make a living by others consuming what we produce. Though we do consume, we also turn around and use these materials to produce. That is the main function of our consumption. We don’t consume to have. We consume to use. Also, many of the practitioners are not making a living from this form, though they wish they could. For them it is a space to express themselves and to not feel restricted. And for the few that are, it is a long and hard struggle.
Hi All,
Just a friendly note. I am requesting that pictures up loaded to this site be those of the show. I have deleted one that because A, it’s not from the show, and B mainly because its display had sent off signals to those in charge of tribe. And as a result, our site was sent and restricted to the mature section. Though I am all for expression of artistry, I do want to keep this site open to people of all ages. I do not want to restrict people from learning about the show or the dance form. Therefore, I have deleted the picture and requested us to be taken off the restricted, mature section.
Thanks,
Amara
ShapeShifters--Tribal Breaks & Bellydancing - Sat.
An invitation to ShapeShifters--a night of transforming beings....
Hello Belly Beauties, Art Mavens, Fashionistas and Delirious Denizens of the Underground Dance Scene
I have a delicious Tribal-Funky Freakfest to offer you this Saturday night…It’s an art and dance party that will leave you grateful that ya mama gave you the admission ticket to life.
For years, David Starfire and I have been DJing some sweet and crazy events (mostly in the Bay Area) where Breakbeats merge with World Dance Beatz. We have been wanting to create more of these Ethno Tribal Dance events here for our Southern California Dance Community.
Shapeshifters is the first such collaboration.
At ShapeShifters there will be an indoor room devoted to Funky Breaks with local legends Patricio, Ooah, David and Christian. Then outside, on the patio, the music will be devoted to delicious groovy Breaks and Tribal Beatz with strong flavas of India, Arabia and Africa.
If you love to Belly Dance or if you love Tribal Drums and Rhythms, you will want to visit the patio! Joining me there on the World Dance Beatz Crew will be Dandelion, Imagika and Tamer.
Dandelion has DJed across much of India. DJ Imagika is a belly dancer herself. Tamer's family is from Egypt, so he knows how to support you in the shimmy and shake. I have DJed Ethno Tribal dance sets across the country for crowds of over a thousand dancers (see my tribe photo album for the fun dance pixs). So we are prepared to dish it out for ya!
At 11:00 on the patio, I will be playing a set that will be begin BellydanceFunkySensual and will build to rock your sexy asses with bootie slammin Tribal Breaks and Beatz!
Out of respect for the neighborhood, we will have to chill out the music on the patio at about 1:00 AM. --- SO IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE OUR EROTIC EXOTIC PATIO DANCE SCENE, PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY.
The artists reception begins at 6:00. Come before 10:00 pm and you save $5.
DJ times
Outside
10:00-11:00 Imagika
11:00-12:00 Patrick Harvard
12:00-1:00 Dandelion
(then, if we can get away with downtempo, lower volume sound outside after 1:00 AM)
1:00-2:00 Dandelion
2:00-3:15 Tamer & Imagika
3:15-4:00 Patrick Harvard
Hey All,
I just got a preview of the new EEMED 2005 video yesterday. And it looks great! Ana is doing a great job. And the cover that Elayssa is creating is phenomenal. We had so many wonderful picutres it was hard to choose.
It should be out in the next few days. Let you all know.
Hello Hollywood and... Fusion Dance Web Ring
Off to L.A. tonight to start working on our new (BelCobraDance) piece for the Dance Resource Center Choreography Workshop. So excited! It's short, insanely fast movement (the fugue from Shostakovich's Prelude and Fugue #12), and we'll be working closely on Saturdays with Glenn Edgerton, former Executive Director of Nederlands Dance Theater, former dancer with Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor, William Forsythe, and Jiri Kylian. Can't wait! There will be a "works in progress" showing of the Workshop dances, probably in December. Will post it on Tribe.
And... there is now a Fusion Dance WebRing. For those of you here who have websites, dance companies, etc. check it out. WebRing really does increase visits to your website, I've seen a big spike in visits over the last week or so! (www.webring.com, enter Fusion Dance in the search bar)
Hi All,
I created a new tribe, called experimental Middle Eastern/belly dance. I would like this tribe to a forum for those who are and especially those who are not involved with EEMED but for anyone interested in Experimental Middle Eastern dance. I would like this to be a space for all of us to explore and to hear what people are doing with this emerging style of dance.
I hope to hear from you all.
Take care,
Amara
Congratulations on getting LA Weekly's dance pick of the week!!! Yippy. I
haven't seen the picture yet. But here's the write up.
hugs,
AN EVENING OF EXPERIMENTAL MIDDLE EASTERN DANCE
The history of belly dance reaches back centuries with a geographical sweep
extending from Arabia to Asia. In the U.S., the traditions have been
sometimes honored and sometimes commercialized, although the latest
generation of dancers - incorporating a range of contemporary and national
dance forms - have infused classic belly dance with a creative new energy.
Some of the bolder endeavors have been undertaken by the dozen troupes
assembled here by producer-choreographer-dancer Amara, whose own piece,
Becoming, utilizes film and live performance. Film, specifically silent-film
depictions of the femme fatale, also draws attention from Desert Sin Dance
Company. Butoh influences show up in both Laurie Buenafe's See and Ya
Helewa!'s Unknown, while Chinese dance informs the Perfumes of Araby's
retelling of The Monkey King. Storytelling and myth, magic and mysticism
fuel dances from Anaheed, Brandon D. Nilles, Dawna, Djahari, Lorraine, Myths
Dance Company and Tandemonium. Ample evidence here that belly dance is far
more than after-dinner entertainment. Electric Lodge, 1416 Electric Ave.,
Venice; Fri.-Sat., July 15-16 & 22-23, 8 p.m.; Sun., July 17 & 24, 7 p.m.;
Advertising Op. in Tribal Fusion Bellydance Calendar
Livenitup_8@yahoo.com
(909)821-8030
To whomever it may concern,
I, LaRa of Devadasi, am putting together a 2006 (Non-Profit) Tribal Fusion Bellydance Calendar (Large, 12-month, wall-size) in order to raise money for Doctors Without Borders
( www.doctorswithoutborders.org ). Although Tribal Fusion Bellydancers are a large part of the target audience, it is projected that the consumer audience will be much larger. Furthermore, because this is a non-profit fundraiser, strictly for charity purposes, it is difficult to fund the up-front publishing costs, which can be viewed at ( http://www.yearbox.com/fundraising.html ) . As such, it is my wish to use the last page of the calendar for advertising space. In return for a $100, or more, sponsorship you will have a full-color advertisement in the calendar & recognition for your donation to the project. For a smaller donation of $50-$99, you will receive recognition for your contribution to the project, and your website information will be included.
This calendar, is already being widely anticipated in the bellydance community as it will include full-page professional photos of some of the biggest names in Tribal Fusion Bellydance, such as: Rachel Brice of The Indigo & Bellydance Superstars ( www.RachelBrice.com ), Frederique of Belly Groove ( www.BellyGroove.com ), Kami Liddle (www.KamiLiddle.com ), Sharon Kihara of The Indigo and Bellydance Supertars ( www.SharonKihara.com ), Atash Maya of San Diego ( www.AtashMaya.com ), Tribal Feat of California and Texas
( www.TribalFeat.com), Shawna Rai of Natya Hara ( www.NatyaHara.com ), Sherri formerly of Urban Tribal Dance Company, Katie Kay and Monica of Danger Sassy Pants (www.DangerSassyPants.com ), Devadasi World Fusion Dance ( www.Devadasi.com ), as well as up and coming projects Blue Damsel & Tribal Union.
As you can see, this is a great opportunity for you to advertise to your target audience, sponsor a much anticipated project, and indirectly donate to a philanthropic cause. If you are interested, and/or have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me as soon as possible as space is limited & the deadline for production is near.
Thank you for your time
“Be as You’d Like the World to Be,”
LaRa
press release
Hi All,
Still dancing at Musee (one more week!) while getting EEMED together. The countdown has commenced. Here's a copy of the press release for some teasing.
hugs,
Amara
Take a breathtaking journey past the edges of Middle Eastern and belly dance. After five sold out seasons, Amara, once again, proudly presents An Evening of Experimental Middle Eastern Dance (EEMED), one of the most innovative Middle Eastern dance concerts in the United States. This year the show runs from July 15 – 16 at 8 p.m., July 17 at 7 p.m., July 22-23 at 8 p.m., and July 24 at 7 p.m. at the Electric Lodge - 1416 Electric Ave., Venice. Tickets are $25. Reservations: call (818) 906-1947 or email amara@amaradances.com
This year’s collaborative performances include Amara, Anaheed, Brandon D. Nilles, Dawna, Desert Sin Dance Company, Djahari, Laurie Buenafe, Lorraine, Myths Dance Company, Perfumes of Araby Dance Company, Tandemonium Dance Company, and Ya Helewa! Dance Company.
EEMED was conceived in the Winter of 1999 by a group of dancers needing a space in which to perform their controversial works. Since the Fall of 2000, EEMED has offered Middle Eastern dancers the opportunity to nurture and present new and exciting forms of expression. Dancers produce exclusively for EEMED cutting edge works that are based in the Middle Eastern dance idiom. They make traditional boarders, edges, and standard representations visible by playing in-between and pushing past them.
This year’s production presents works that proceed to break down the stereotypical image of the belly dancer. Through a combination of film and live performance, Amara’s “Becoming” takes a serious look at the transformation of a woman into the ideal image of the belly dancer. While, Desert Sin’s “An Ode to Silent Film” pokes fun at 1920’s Hollywood representations of the Oriental, femme fatale. Dawna in “Minnie the Moocher Dances” also presents the image in historical context but one as fun, flirtatious, and full of sass. In “Loie Fuller: Goddess of Light,” Anaheed and Amara pay tribute to the innovative American Dancer of the 1890s, whose utilization of light, fabric, and symbolic imagery continues to inspire contemporary dancers.
Magic and mysticism are dusted throughout the show. Lorraine’s “Floating” presents an awe-inspiring experience as she dances with a magical wand. Performing a spiritual practice, Tandemonium, as shamans in “Delirium Awakens the Sacred Sprit,” summon the power of animal spirits through performing their own music.
There is no lack of epic story telling in this year’s show. In “Amazons,” Myths present issues of procreation in a women warrior’s community. In “Eden,” Djahari, Amara, and Brandon D. Nilles offer a unique interpretation of this ancient story by creating a triangle relationship between Lilith (the first woman), Adam (the first man), and Eve (the Other woman). Myths’ “Pandora’s Box” is a spectacular version of a woman tempted by the evil she unleashes. The Perfumes of Araby combine Chinese and Middle Eastern dance. In their telling of “The Monkey King” a monk, with the assistance of the Monkey King, takes an adventours journey to find and return the Treasured Book to the Buddha Goddess.
The combination of Japanese Butoh movement practice with Middle Eastern dance has inspired two works. Laurie Buenafe, in “See,” explores the fluidity of Middle Eastern dance with Butoh’s organic spontaneity and breath in order to present the sad invocation of a ghost. In Ya Helewa!’s performance of “Unknown” the dancers employ a structured improvisation to express the mass horror, chaos, and destruction of war.
This performance is a wonderful opportunity to experience a multicultural, avant-garde event. Performers and audiences explore roles beyond the standard portrayals of Middle Eastern dance and deal with issues not often foregrounded in its traditional performance settings.
